Bolt Machine Carriage Steel Black Oxide
Bolt Machine Carriage Steel Black Oxide
In 1818, Connecticut blacksmith Micah Rugg invented and patented a tool to mechanically trim bolt heads. Carriage bolts were born and were developed predominantly to fasten metal to wood, typically through iron strengthening plates on either side of a wooden beam.
The square shoulder beneath the head allows the bolt to be self-locking when placed through a square hole in a metal strap, or a round hole in most wood. This allows the fastener to be installed with a single tool working from one side. Carriage bolts were, and still are, extensively used in security fixings as the smooth domed head and square nut below prevent the fastener from being unlocked from the insecure side.
To complement our range of fixtures and fittings, we have sourced a number of vintage style industrial carriage bolts in a black oxide finish. They are available in a variety of sizes and lengths to suit various applications such as furniture construction, woodworking projects, lighting design, and any vintage industrial project. These carriage bolts will create a more authentic appearance to your work. Matching washers and square nuts to suit these carriage bolts are also available.
For those of us who struggle with imperial measurements, we have included metric equivalents next to the sizes, usually in brackets [].
